What is God’s will for my life?

The age old question that has been mulled over and thought about for all generations. What is God’s will for my life? How do I figure out God’s will for me? What am I suppose to do with God’s will as it relates to my life?

This is the question that many people wrestle with. I’ve spent many of conversations with people who ask this very question. And it’s a question that baffle many as to why they can’t figure it out.

So how can we know? Listen to the words found in Scripture:

“Additionally then, brothers and sisters, we ask and encourage you in the Lord Jesus, that as you have received instruction from us on how you should live and please God – as you are doing – do this even more. For you know what commands we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is God’s will, your sanctification.” – 1 Thessalonians 4:1-3(a)

The answer to the question of God’s will for my life: your sanctification.

What is sanctification? Seems like a big church word. It is, but at the root, it is fairly simple. Sanctification is the process of becoming more and more like Jesus. It is something that has no end, so it’s never-ending.

Once a believer in Christ, we are infants in the faith. We need to grow up, right? As a baby grows into a child, they then grow into a teenager, and into a young adult. Throughout that time they are learning how to live, how to eat, how to talk, how to speak, how to do everything. A constant state of learning and growing.

Adults both young and old continue to grow. They continue to grow in knowledge – whether it is useless or actually used for good. The big idea is that form birth until death we are constantly growing and learning.

The same is with the follower of Christ. When we come to faith and knowledge in the Lord Jesus, we are infants in the faith. We don’t know what to do. We need something to make us more like Jesus – sanctification.

Within sanctification our hearts are shaped into what Christ desires them to be. Our minds begin to be conformed to what Christ wants. Our thoughts are in tune with His. The Holy Spirit moves in and through us to make us more like Christ.

When our lives are in line with Christ then we will give like we should, we will go like we should, we will proclaim the good news of Jesus like we should. We won’t have to ask what the will of our lives is. We know. We know it’s to become more like Christ. It’s to be sanctified.

Believer, today know that the will for your life is your sanctification. Know that. Believe that. Bank on that. Put your hope in Christ and His finished work.

Unbeliever, Christ wants you. He desires you. He wants a relationship with you, to make you more like Him, and to love Him. He longs after you. Trust Him. Have faith in Him. Know Him. He is fully capable to forgive you no matter what. He desires to forgive people. When you think that you are so bad that you can’t be forgiven, there is one person who wants to forgive you – His name is Jesus. Turn from your sin, and believe in Christ.

Christ desires all of us. Let’s live knowing that the will of our lives is already determined – to be more like Jesus.
